With a history that spans 80 years of continuous operations, San Diego International Airport has pioneered many commercial aviation “firsts” including the nation’s first daily scheduled year-round flights in 1925. In the modern era, SAN has pioneered the implementation of airport-wide recycling programs with help from Forms+Surfaces’ Universal Receptacles.

Made from durable stainless steel, Universal Receptacles provide the Airport with an integrated solution for both conventional litter and recyclables. Litter receptacles are on hand in a variety of top opening and side opening configurations. Receptacles for co-mingled recyclables were specified with two round holes for beverage containers and a slotted lid designed to accept newspapers. Forms+Surfaces was able to supply the recycling lids and accompanying graphics in a custom blue color to match the Airport’s recycling program color scheme. Always at the leading edge of innovation, San Diego International is now diverting a significant percentage of its daily waste into the recycling stream while also providing added convenience for passengers and airport staff.
