The Westin Charlotte opened in Charlotte’s
business and entertainment district in 2003. The hotel’s design—attributed to internationally renowned architect John Portman—is
recognized for an unfaltering attention to both aesthetic and
functional details. And as good as The Westin looks on the outside,
the finishes inside are even better.
For the hotel lobby centerpiece, Forms+Surfaces manufactured a custom
chandelier designed for the space by Mr. Portman. In reality an
illuminated sculpture rather than a lighting fixture, the piece is
titled “Aspiration”. In the words of Mr. Portman, "Charlotte is ready
to leap forward; I designed and named this piece in recognition of
Charlotte’s great aspirations.” If advancement is indeed Charlotte’s
trend, The Westin plays an important role by upping the ante for good
design.
