Mission Bay is a massive redevelopment
project now underway on San Francisco’s eastern waterfront.
Formerly home to an unsightly collection of abandoned rail yards,
docks and warehouses, the 300 acre site will be transformed into a
new, mixed-use neighborhood of apartments, offices, shops and
parks along with a university research center.
Forms+Surfaces was asked to supply site amenities that would
reflect the project’s contemporary design and be durable enough to
withstand the salt air and fog for which the area is well known.
Environmental sustainability was also a key consideration on a
project that emphasizes public transportation, recycling and other
environmental initiatives.
The Pacifica Bench’s simple design and ipé wood construction fit
the requirements perfectly. Responsibly harvested from managed
forests, the ipé is also highly resistant to abuse, moisture and
decay. The unique receptacle is made from rustproof
cast aluminum and includes a conventional litter container and a
recycle bin in a single, easy-to-use unit. Combining innovative
design with a sense of purpose, the Forms+Surfaces products at
Mission Bay are making a meaningful contribution to a project
that’s redefining San Francisco’s last large undeveloped space.
