With its soaring, gothic-influenced glass
spires, PPG Place has often been called the crown jewel of the
Pittsburgh skyline. A major revamp of the complex’s one-acre central
plaza included these magnificent custom planters by Forms+Surfaces.
Fabricated entirely from stainless steel, the planters’ invisible
welds present a perfectly clean, seamless appearance. The sharply
angled brim is an integral part of the welded structure and mirrors
the pointed gothic arch elements seen in the surrounding architecture.
Designed with the plaza’s holiday celebrations in mind, a conduit
built into the planters supplies power for festive lighting. Combined
with a new fountain, seasonal ice rink, seating and other amenities,
Forms+Surfaces’ planters have helped turn what was once an uninviting
space into a focal point for public activities and a powerful symbol
of downtown Pittsburgh’s revitalization.
