As part of a campus-wide effort to reduce
the amount of waste going to landfills, the University of Washington
in Seattle is replacing all outdoor litter receptacles with
Forms+Surfaces’ Urban Renaissance™ Recyclers. Combining a traditional
waste container and recycle bin in one unit, the Urban Recycler has
impressed campus officials with its convenience and quick acceptance:
“We’re calling them Smart Cans“ says Anne Eskridge, Manager of
Property and Transport Services at the University of Washington. “From
day one, they have been used effectively and appropriately without any
supplemental signage or instruction. Contamination of the recycling
unit is very low, below 1%. These new receptacles have enabled us to
address our recycling needs without requiring additional space for a
second receptacle. It is a marvelously efficient solution.”
Another recent addition to UW’s outdoor spaces is Forms+Surfaces’
Hudson bench. Made from decay-resistant, sustainably harvested Ipé
wood, Hudson’s simple design and incredible ruggedness make it ideal
for a campus environment.
For indoor use, Forms+Surfaces was asked to fabricate custom public
area bins color-coded to the University's specifications. Made from
corrosion-resistant stainless steel with powdercoat finish, the litter
and recycling bins were designed to accommodate the University's
existing system of rigid plastic liners for wet materials and reusable
fabric bags for dry recyclables. The dent-proof polyethylene lids were
supplied with custom-shaped openings that also conform to existing,
campus-wide standards. A hinged front access door makes these new bins
far easier to service than those previously in use.
Outdoors or indoors, standard or custom, Forms+Surfaces is earning
high marks at the University of Washington with a comprehensive range
of litter, recycling and site furniture solutions.
