What is LEED®
?
“LEED®
” stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The LEED
rating system is a program that was developed by the U.S. Green Building
Council to define a set of national standards for sustainable building
design. LEED is a voluntary, performance-oriented system in which points
and credits are awarded for specific building features or design choices
that satisfy the various criteria encompassed by the LEED rating system.
Is there just one LEED®
Standard?
No. There are now several different LEED standards that cover different
types or phases of construction. The majority of projects using
Forms+Surfaces products are covered by LEED-NC, the LEED standard for new
commercial construction and major renovation projects.
How are LEED®
points and credits earned?
The LEED-NC rating system is organized as a set of 34 credits and 7
prerequisites, together worth a total of 69 points. In order to earn the
points associated with a credit, the project must meet (and document that
it meets) all of the credit requirements. Project design teams are free to
choose which credits they wish to apply for, but every project must
satisfy the 7 prerequisites to be considered for certification.
Are there different levels of LEED®
certification?
Yes. Depending on the number of points achieved, a building can attain
Platinum (52–69 points), Gold (39–51 points), Silver (33–38 points) or
LEED certified (26–32 points) status.
Are Forms+Surfaces products LEED®
certified?
The intent of the LEED standard is to provide design guidelines and a
third-party certification tool for green building. Products cannot be LEED
certified; only buildings can be. However, many Forms+Surfaces products
can contribute to a project’s overall LEED score.
Can Forms+Surfaces products help a project earn LEED®
points and
credits?
Yes. While points or credits are not awarded specifically for using a
particular product, many Forms+Surfaces products offer features that can
be factored into a project’s point and credit calculations. Such
calculations can be based on recycled content or other qualities that
relate to the criteria encompassed by the LEED rating system.

Sustainable Sites - Credit 8: Light Pollution Reduction
The intent of this credit is to minimize light trespass from the building
and site, reduce sky-glow to increase night sky access, improve nighttime
visibility through glare reduction and reduce development impact on
nocturnal environments.
Applicable Products:
Taiyo™ Bollards
Triada™ Bollard
Triada™ Pedestrian Lighting
L209 Lighthouse Bollard
Materials & Resources - Prerequisite 1: Storage and Collection of
Recyclables
The intent of this prerequisite is to facilitate the reduction of waste
generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in
landfills.
Applicable Products:
Urban Renaissance™ Litter and
Recycling Receptacles
Universal Litter and Recycling
Receptacles
Transit™ Litter and Recycling Receptacles
Triad™
Litter and Recycling Receptacles
Paseo™ Litter and Recycling
Receptacles
Materials & Resources - Credit 4: Recycled Content
The intent of this credit is to increase demand for building products that
incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting
from extraction and processing of virgin materials.
Applicable Products:
Many Forms+Surfaces products have significant recycled content that can be
used to calculate Credit 4. Please contact our LEED Accredited
Sustainability Manager (email:
green@forms-surfaces.com) for recycled content information on specific
products including breakdowns of post-consumer and post-industrial
recycled content.
Materials & Resources - Credit 5: Regional Materials
The intent of this credit is to increase demand for building materials and
products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby
supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental
impacts resulting from transportation.
Applicable Products:
Projects applying for certification under version 2.1 of the LEED Rating
System can qualify for this credit if the project is located within 500
miles of either our East Coast or West Coast facilities. Please contact us
(email:
green@forms-surfaces.com) for additional information.
Indoor Environmental Quality - Prerequisite 2: Environmental Tobacco
Smoke (ETS) Control
The intent of this prerequisite is to minimize exposure of building
occupants, indoor surfaces and ventilation air distribution systems to
Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS).
Applicable Products:
Buttler™ Ash Receptacles
Universal Receptacles
Urban Renaissance™ Receptacles
