Long Life Cycle
Beautiful, amazingly strong and dimensionally stable, this dense hardwood
is extremely resistant to moisture, insects, fire, vandalism, checking,
splitting and decay. Ipé’s long life cycle benefits the environment as new
trees will need to be harvested far less often to replace rotted or failed
wood components.
Sustainably Harvested
Logging practices for tropical hardwoods are often misunderstood. The
greatest danger to tropical forests is clear cutting. Clear cutting occurs
to clear land for farming or cattle ranching. For sustainable timber
extraction, relatively small numbers of trees are selectively harvested in
a manner that leaves the overall forest ecosystem intact. Responsible,
sustainably managed harvesting of species like Ipé adds economic value to
the standing forest resource and provides employment for local populations
while avoiding the damaging environmental consequences of clear cutting.
